Wellbeing shows in performance: How to support the performance and recovery of sporting and working dogs

A dog working in agility, hunting, working trials, or mushing is subjected to continuous physical strain. Every jump, acceleration, stop and sudden change of direction puts stress on muscles, joints and tendons. Most owners focus on training, but fewer stop to consider how to support their dog’s body in coping with physical strain and recovering from it. This is exactly why we developed Nutrolin® SPORT.

An active dog’s body is constantly at work

Working and sporting dogs perform at a level that most pet dogs never experience. Agility dogs jump and turn at full speed. Hunting dogs may travel across challenging terrain for hours. Working trials include tasks that require strength and endurance.

While physical strain is a natural part of an active dog’s life, the body also needs support and protection. This helps dogs stay active, healthy and capable throughout long sporting and working careers.

For this reason, more and more owners of active dogs are paying attention not only to training itself, but also to recovery and nutrition.

Adequate energy intake, a high-quality diet and carefully selected fatty acids and antioxidants all play an important role in the wellbeing of active dogs. In particular, the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are key nutrients for sporting and working dogs.

How to support the performance and recovery of sporting and working dogs?

The foundations of everyday care have a major impact on an active dog’s wellbeing. While training is essential for building performance, rest, nutrition and monitoring workload are equally important for helping a dog train, work and compete successfully.

Provide varied exercise

Balanced training develops the dog as a whole and helps prevent problems caused by repetitive strain. Overly repetitive training places stress on the same muscles, joints and tendons day after day. Varied activities also provide mental stimulation and strengthen the bond between dog and handler.

Pay attention to small changes

If your dog starts moving stiffly, tires more quickly than usual or becomes less enthusiastic about training, it deserves your attention. Not every change requires a veterinary visit, but the wellbeing of sporting and working dogs should always be monitored carefully.

Support the body with quality nutrition

Adequate energy intake, a high-quality diet and carefully selected fatty acids and antioxidants all play an important role in the wellbeing of active dogs. In particular, the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are key nutrients for sporting and working dogs.

Allow time for recovery

Dogs that love to work rarely know when to slow down. It is the handler’s responsibility to ensure there is enough recovery time alongside training. Although it may be tempting to do one more repetition, sometimes stopping earlier is the smarter choice. Dogs need plenty of sleep, and active dogs often need even more.

Recovery is the foundation of both wellbeing and performance. Even when exercise ends, its effects continue within the body. Training places demands on muscles, joints and tendons, while energy reserves are depleted. True recovery takes place during rest, when the body maintains and renews structures challenged by physical activity and prepares for the next performance.

A well-recovered dog is typically energetic, motivated and eager to work.

Practical ways to support recovery

  • Match training intensity and volume to your dog’s fitness level.
  • Monitor movement quality and motivation to train.
  • Allow sufficient rest between demanding sessions.
  • Feed according to energy expenditure and provide a balanced diet with adequate hydration.
  • Warm up before exercise and cool down afterwards.
  • Supplement the diet with appropriate nutrients designed for active dogs.

Nutrolin® SPORT complements the daily diet of sporting and working dogs with EPA, DHA and antioxidants. However, it does not replace adequate rest, properly planned training or a diet that meets the dog’s energy requirements.

Achieving top results through holistic wellbeing

Competing at the Agility World Championship level, Isabelle Orenius Emanuelsson and Jouni Orenius know that success is the result of many factors working together.

“We believe success is built from many pieces, including high-quality training, good muscular fitness, and adequate rest. Simply put, it is about giving the dog the opportunity to live a healthy and thriving life. Nutrolin® is one piece of that puzzle, and we would not want to be without it.”

A long sporting career places continuous demands on a dog’s body. That is why the Oreniuses focus not only on training, but also on recovery and nutrition.

“When your goal is to compete at the highest level in the world, you need to take the best possible care of your dog’s body. We invest in training, muscle conditioning, and rest, but sometimes a dog also needs support from within. Nutrolin® products have helped our dogs stay in great condition for years. Nutrolin® SPORT, in particular, is an important part of the daily nutrition of our actively training dogs.”

EPA, DHA and antioxidants support performance and recovery

The nutritional needs of active dogs differ from those of pet dogs. Nutrolin® SPORT contains high levels of fatty acids and antioxidants that help protect the body during heavy physical activity and support recovery afterwards.

Particularly important are the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are sourced from fish and microalgae. These fatty acids support healthy joints, heart function and brain health. Key antioxidants in the formula include astaxanthin and vitamin E.

The high levels of EPA and DHA, combined with antioxidants, vitamin E and astaxanthin, help support dogs during periods of intense physical activity and recovery. To achieve the full benefit of the product, supplementation should begin approximately two months before the start of a training, competition or hunting season. Dogs that work actively year-round can receive the product continuously.

What makes Nutrolin® SPORT unique?

In addition to fish oil, Nutrolin® SPORT contains krill oil. The omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are present in phospholipid form, whereas fish oil omega-3s are primarily found in triglyceride form. Phospholipids are natural building blocks of cell membranes, allowing the body to utilize them efficiently.

In studies with sled dogs, phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be a highly effective way to increase omega-3 stores. They have been observed to increase the omega-3 index efficiently, making krill oil a particularly interesting ingredient for sporting and working dogs (Burri et al., 2020).

Astaxanthin and vitamin E help protect cells during exercise

Intense physical activity increases oxidative stress within the body. Oxidative stress refers to cellular damage caused by reactive molecules produced during metabolism and exercise. Because antioxidants help protect cells, they are an important part of nutrition for active dogs.

Nutrolin® SPORT contains naturally occurring astaxanthin from krill oil, often regarded as one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, as well as vitamin E, which supports the body’s natural antioxidant defense system. Together, they help protect cells from exercise-related stress and complement the benefits of marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.

EPA, DHA, krill phospholipids, astaxanthin and vitamin E work together in a carefully designed formulation to support the wellbeing of active dogs both during exercise and throughout recovery.

To gain the full benefit of Nutrolin® SPORT, start supplementation approximately two months before the hunting, training or competition season begins. Dogs that work actively throughout the year can receive the product continuously.

If your dog participates in less physically demanding activities, such as nose work or rally obedience, Nutrolin® OMEGA SENSITIVE® is usually the better choice. It supports everyday wellbeing, with particular benefits for the brain, heart and joints.

Nutrolin® SPORT is designed for dogs exposed to significant physical workload several times per week.

Add the oil to your dog’s food once daily according to the weight-based dosing instructions on the package. One pump delivers two millilitres of oil.

Store the opened bottle in the refrigerator and use it within four months. Please note that the natural red pigment from krill oil may stain textiles.

Consistency is key. The benefits of the product depend on the continuous intake of EPA, DHA and antioxidants as part of the dog’s daily diet.

More healthy training days

In the life of a sporting or working dog, success is not about a single outstanding performance. It is about maintaining the ability to train, work and compete week after week and season after season. When the body receives the support it needs for both performance and recovery, dogs are better equipped to stay active throughout the entire season.

Nutrolin® SPORT is the nutritional partner for active dogs.

Hunting dogs perform at a level that most pet dogs never experience. While physical strain is a natural part of an active dog's life, the body also needs support and protection. This helps dogs stay active, healthy and capable throughout long hunting careers.
